India vs Australia Day 4 Live Score, WTC Final 2023: Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane kept India alive in the run chase after India lost Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara. India are 164/3 and need 280 to win from the final day. Scott Boland broke Indian hearts after he dismissed Gill right at the stroke of Tea before Sharma and Pujara were snapped up by Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins. Gill and opening partner Rohit Sharma had started started steadily mining 41/0 after the first 7 overs before Boland’s strike.

Earlier, Alex Carey remained unbeaten at 66 as Australia declared their second innings at 270/8 with India needing 444 to win the World Test Championship title. Carey was ably supported by Mitchell Starc who scored a sizzling 41 runs while Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets.

Starting the day at 123 for 4, Carey and Cameron Green (25) added 43 runs for the sixth wicket after Umesh Yadav (2/32 in 12 overs) picked up the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne (41 off 126 balls) at the start of the day. Jadeja had the best figure among the Indian bowlers as he had Green played on while trying to play a forward defensive shot. India did well to take six wickets but the target is becoming ever more imposing on a misbehaving pitch.

Rahul Pandey: “This is smart from Pujara,” believes Ricky Ponting. The former Aussie skipper is speaking of the Indian number three tapping the bat by the non-striker’s end to subtly signal to the umpire that Mitchell Starc is landing in the danger area. It’s been two straight overs now that the ground staff has come in to stomp the area where Starc’s landing his foot in. There are visible footmarks. “There’s definitely a plan behind this with the footmarks for Nathan Lyon,” goes Ponting. “It (the landing) creates a crater. Rahul Pandey: “Make him score his runs somewhere else,” former Australia captain Ricky Ponting had exclaimed on comms during the early part of India’s first innings on Day 2. This, for the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma playing his fabled pull shot.

“It’s a shot he’s known for. You talk to any Indian players, ‘Who has the best pull shot?’ They’d probably say, Rohit Sharma. Body weight going on the off side, he’s inside the line of the ball,” Ponting had said. The suggestion for Pat Cummins? “Push the deep mid wicket back and take that option away from Rohit Sharma.”

Clearly Australia want him to play that shot - perhaps fall while playing at with a deep mid wicket present - as Mitchell Starc bangs one short in the seventh over of the chase. Little does it help as Sharma picks it clean and dispatches it straight over fine leg for six. First of the Indian innings and if Australia persist with the length, might not be the last.
